Chapter 1

The Night Before the Pitch

Regina is thirty and built her practice in a converted courtyard house in Colonia Roma with two draughtsmen and a stubborn belief that a building should feel like an embrace.

She wants the commission, a library that would make her name, and the only other firm in the running is yours. She has studied your work harder than she will ever admit.

She is funny, ferocious and loyal, and she has never lost a pitch to someone she respected. That is the problem with you.

The pitch is at nine. At midnight she is still at the table, with a bottle of mezcal and your name written on a scrap of paper that she keeps turning over.
